VAT or Value Added Tax is another name of sales tax which is charged on sale of goods. But, we can define the VAT as a multi-point tax on value addition which is collected at different stages of sale with a provision for set-off for tax paid at the previous stage/tax paid on inputs. In simple words the VAT is a tax which is added on additional price which the seller collects from the purchaser. For example, M/s XYZ Limited purchased a computer for Rs.40000/=. The paid Sales Tax @ 5% on Rs.40000/= i.e. Rs.2000/=. Now, the sold the computer for Rs.50000/= and charged Sales Tax @ 5% on Rs.50000/= i.e. Rs.2500/=. In this case, it is clear that M/s XYZ collected Sales Tax Rs.2500/= against the payment of Rs.2000/=. So, Rs.500/= shall be called VAT.
INPUT VAT:- It is called as Tax Credit also. When the sales tax is paid on purchases of goods for resale purpose then it shall be treated as INPUT VAT. For Example, M/s Morning Place purchase some goods for resale purpose for Rs.10000/= and paid sales tax Rs.500/= on the goods. In this case, This amount of Sales Tax Rs.500/=, shall be treated as INPUT VAT.
OUTPUT VAT:- When the sales tax is collected on sale of goods, it will be called as OUTPUT VAT. For Example, M/s Morning Place the goods for Rs.12000/= and charged Rs.600/= as sales tax. This amount of sales tax i.e. Rs.600/= shall be treated as OUTPUT VAT.
Note: VAT INPUT and VAT OUTPUT are charged in case of local purchase or sale only. Local Purchase or Local Sale means the purchase or sales made within a state.
Solution:-
We shall calculate the tax liability of M/s Morning Place during a return period as under:-
Balance Brought Forward from Previous Return Period Rs.1000/=
Add: Input VAT during current Return Period Rs.10000/=
Total Input Vat Rs.11000/=
Less: Output Vat Collected on Sale Rs.5000/=
Balance of Input Vat to be carried forward to next
Return Period Rs.6000/=
In above case, there is no tax liability since the party has already paid more tax i.e. Rs.6000/=
Note:
In a Return period, M/s ABC Limited purchased goods from local suppliers for Rs.500000/= and paid INPUT VAT for Rs.25000/=. They sold the goods for Rs.600000/= within the same state and charged Rs.30000/= as OUTPU VAT. They also sold the goods out of state for Rs.100000/= and charged Central Sales Tax (CST) @ 2% i.e. Rs.2000/=. Calculate the Tax Liability of the firm.
Solution:-
We shall calculate the sales tax liability of M/s ABC Limited as under:-
- Open the Company in which you want to alter the unit of measure. For example, we want to alter some unit of measure in M/s XYZ Limited. So, we will open M/S XYZ Limited.
- Select ‘Inventory Information’ under ‘Gateway of Tally’. Now your screen shall be seen as under:-

- Now, select ‘Alter’. Now the screen shall be seen in the following forms:-

Note: Please note that no stock item can be deleted if any entry under that item is pending in tally. It means to delete any stock item, first you have to delete all entries covered by that stock item then only you can delete the stock item.
WHAT IS VAT
Types of VAT (Value Added Tax)
VAT is divided in two parts as under:-INPUT VAT:- It is called as Tax Credit also.
CALCULATION OF TAX LIABILITY UNDER VAT SYSTEM
- Calculate the Input Tax on all purchases during the return period.
- Add the amount of tax credit, brought forward from previous return period.
- Calculate the Vat Output on Sale made by the business firm.
- Now, deduct the Output tax from Input Tax and Balance Brought Forward
- If total of input tax/tax credit is more than output tax then it means that the business firm need not to deposit any sales tax with sales tax authorities since it has already paid more sales tax.
Solution:-
We shall calculate the tax liability of M/s Morning Place during a return period as under:-
Balance Brought Forward from Previous Return Period Rs.1000/=
Add: Input VAT during current Return Period Rs.10000/=
Total Input Vat Rs.11000/=
Less: Output Vat Collected on Sale Rs.5000/=
Balance of Input Vat to be carried forward to next
Return Period Rs.6000/=
In above case, there is no tax liability since the party has already paid more tax i.e. Rs.6000/=
Note:
- If there is any balance lying in VAT account after adjusting all local sales, then it can be adjusted to against Central Sales Tax collected.
- No tax credit is given against sales tax amount on Central Purchases.
- If output tax is more than input tax plus tax credit then the sales tax amount is to be deposited with sales tax authorities.
Solution:-
We shall calculate the sales tax liability of M/s ABC Limited as under:-
PARTICULARS
| AMOUNT(IN RUPEES) |
| Input Vat on Local Purchases |
25000/=
|
| Add: Opening Balance of Tax Credit / Input Vat |
NIL
|
| Total Input VAT |
25000/=
|
| Less: Output Vat on Local Sales |
30000/=
|
| Net amount of VAT to deposit with sale tax authorities |
5000/=
|
| Net CST to be deposited |
2000/=
